I'm Laura,
a photojournalist from Roanoke, Va.
They say a photo is worth a thousand words, but I think an image is strongest when it conveys a powerful few. Or when it evokes one overwhelming emotion. That idea is the motivation behind this project. By narrowing a portrait to a person's hands, their story speaks volumes. At its heart, Project Hands is a photojournalism mission to tell the stories that shape lives, tear down walls and open eyes. Most of these stories come from guests of the Rescue Mission, a comprehensive homeless shelter in Roanoke. This Christian-based organization offers programs to help people physically, psychologically, socially and spiritually. Thank you to all who have confided a piece of their life to me.
